Galveston Beaches

You never realize how good you have it until you see something from a different perspective.  As I explored the beaches in Galveston Texas this year it really reminded me of how spoiled we are by our beaches in Cape May county.  First our beaches reign supreme in cleanliness.  At first I thought their beaches may be carry-in carry-out, they are not and they do have trash and recycling cans on the beaches but it seems they are not used as well as ours in New Jersey.  Next, let’s talk about life guards.  They only have life guard stands towards the center of the island and they are spaced I would estimate about every quarter of a mile apart.  A far cry from our every street.  It is very different, you can swim at any location but there are no life guards watching over you.  In terms of the beach profile, it is reminiscent of Wildwood as it seems like you need to walk out for a while to get to the swells but that was just an illusion.  As I started to walk out, it dropped off from mid calf to above the knee.  This turned out to be just a trough.  As I continued to walk I was back in ankle deep water.  Continuing to walk I found another trough.  Since the beaches were unguarded, this was as far out as I was going.  I did have a buddy swimming with me and there were other people out in the water with us.  As far as the water temperature, my trip during June the water temperature was great but it was too rough for me to feel comfortable swimming without a life guard.  August was calmer but the water temperature was almost ninety degrees.  Yes, I thought this was wonderful at first. It really isn’t because you do not get that refreshing feeling.  The air temperature was also in the high eighties with a feels like temperature in the nineties. Overall I would not turn down the opportunity to swim in Galveston, there is just no place like my home town beaches.  Do you have a favorite beach? Post to the comments, I would love to know where.
