Trying Old Things- Archery

Three on paper!

I don’t even know the first time I shot a bow, it is something that was always a part of my life.  The first bow I remember was a red long bow that I would shoot at a target mounted on a pine tree in the backyard.  It was the seventies and we lived in a rural area.  My dad’s hope was that I would go deer hunting with him.  That never happened, after my parents divorced I don’t even know what happened to that bow.  In the 90’s I started college and gym was still a requirement, you needed a one credit general physical fitness class and a one credit elective.  Wouldn’t you know archery was an option, no thought required to sign up for that.  Dr. Bolnick was the professor and the archery coach for the college team, a wonderful woman that helped me improve my skills. I was back doing something I enjoyed and Dr. Bolnick’s prizes of candy for bullseyes didn’t hurt.  I was invited to join the team but declined due to family obligations.  Some time after that I was at my Grandma’s house with my brother and I wound up with a recurve bow.  Again the bow went to the wayside without having a proper place to shoot.  In the early 2000’s I joined the local sportsman club and finally had a place to shoot.  Consistency is not always my strongest attribute so I would shoot occasionally.  Once again, I stopped shooting and just last week had the opportunity to pick up a bow again. I was in Lancaster and stopped at Lancaster Archery, they have a beautiful indoor range.  The staff is welcoming and helpful.  I rented a bow since I had not brought mine and shot for an hour.  It was enough to remind me of the joy I find in challenging myself and I hope to carve out some time to dust off my bow and get shooting again.  What hobbies or activities that you enjoyed in the past that you put aside?  Is there something you would like to dust off and try again?  I would love to hear about it in the comments.
