Children with Hair Loss Donation

As I started writing for this blog one page quickly became two and that really goes against my original plan to keep my posts short so they don’t take too much time to read.  So this is part one of a multipart series.  My last big hair cut was in 2008 when I donated to another charity that solicits hair donations for cancer patients.  Since that donation, I found out the charity charges for the wigs that are given to children. One of my daughters found the charity Children with Hair Loss and they never charge for the wigs they give to children.  Additionally, they accepted dyed hair.   I made a plan in 2019 and decided I would donate my hair again in December of 2020.  As with many other things Covid wrecked those plans.  I had planned a costume for the Hallowed Half that incorporated my long hair so when it was postponed, I postponed my hair cut.  As many things returned to the new normal, I thought the race would take place only to find out this summer the race would wait another year to play it safe.  I couldn’t wait another year.  I like my long hair and using it for my different costumes but on a daily basis I have to tie it back for work and almost never wear it down outside of work.  At night I had to sleep with it in a bun due to the fear of it strangling me in my sleep!  It was also very heavy when it was wet and took three to four days to dry.  And yet just before I cut it I wore it down and it behaved and looked great and I started to second guess my decision to cut it.  The day of my appointment arrived and I received a call that they would need to push my appointment back thirty minutes as they were running behind.  When I arrived they were finishing up and resetting for my appointment.  I sat in the chair and after the hair stylist took pictures and video she started putting it into small ponytails.  After about the third one, there was a loud bang and the power went out.  The emergency generator came on and the manager told me I would have to go outside.  If the power returned in the next few minutes they would let my appointment continue but if not I would have to reschedule.  The power did not return and I rescheduled for the next day.  Saturday morning I received a call that the power had not been restored and my appointment would need to be rescheduled.  At this point I am thinking maybe I shouldn’t cut my hair.  Sunday morning arrives and I take care of some things around the house.  The phone rings and I see it is the salon, expecting another cancellation I answer.  Instead of another postponement I am asked if I can come in earlier.  Off to the salon I go.  Still a bit nervous I arrive and show the stylist photos of styles I like.  Back to the rubber bands and small ponytails, she gets them all done and the power is still on.  The point of no return, she cuts the first one.  Within a few minutes my hair is short.  It is freeing and lightweight.  I get my hair washed, which I have not done at a salon in about ten years. It is so nice when someone washes your hair.  She finishes the cut and styles my hair, it is very different then what I am used to but I do like it.  I like that I can jump in the pool and not worry about keeping my hair dry because it dries a lot quicker when it is short. I no longer need a hair tie for work and I no longer worry that it will try to strangle me in the middle of the night.  I was able to donate 22 inches of hair.  If you are considering donating your hair, try to grow it out longer than 12 inches, many little girls request long haired wigs and the supply is limited. What is the longest you have grown out your hair?  Do you prefer to keep your hair long or short?

I have always had a short cut, even as a child. I am the youngest of ten children so I’m thinking my mom didn’t have time to mess with my hair. So I never knew what long hair is like.I continue to keep it short because I feel like it’s just “me”.. Congrats for donating to a worthwhile cause. And your new cut looks great! Bet it’s a lot easier now too. Thanks for sharing your story.

Thank you! You can always let your hair grow and see what long hair is like. Short hair can be easier, but requires more maintenance overall.
